Christmas songs that make you consider suicide December 19, 2011

They say suicide is more prevalent during the holidays and I think I know why – it’s that “Christmas Shoes” song.

I was going to write about all the sad Christmas songs like “Blue Christmas,” “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas,” etc. But I decided the really sad Christmas songs are the bad ones. And Christmas Shoes is at the top of the list. I prefer the parody song about the guy who complained because he had no shoes until he saw someone who had no feet. So he said, “Hey, buddy. Can I have your shoes?”

So this blog will be brief. I only ask one favor of you – comment with the Christmas song that makes you want to jump from the nearest bridge to take the pain away. For me, it’s this drivel by Alabama:

It was almost Christmas time, there I stood in another line
Tryin’ to buy that last gift or two, not really in the Christmas mood
Standing right in front of me was a little boy waiting anxiously
Pacing ’round like little boys do
And in his hands he held a pair of shoes

His clothes were worn and old, he was dirty from head to toe
And when it came his time to pay
I couldn’t believe what I heard him say

Chorus:
Sir, I want to buy these shoes for my Mama, please
It’s Christmas Eve and these shoes are just her size
Could you hurry, sir, Daddy says there’s not much time
You see she’s been sick for quite a while
And I know these shoes would make her smile
And I want her to look beautiful if Mama meets Jesus tonight

He counted pennies for what seemed like years
Then the cashier said, “Son, there’s not enough here”
He searched his pockets frantically

Then he turned and he looked at me
He said Mama made Christmas good at our house
Though most years she just did without
Tell me Sir, what am I going to do,
Somehow I’ve got to buy her these Christmas shoes

So I laid the money down, I just had to help him out
I’ll never forget the look on his face when he said
Mama’s gonna look so great

Sir, I want to buy these shoes for my Mama, please
It’s Christmas Eve and these shoes are just her size
Could you hurry, sir, Daddy says there’s not much time
You see she’s been sick for quite a while
And I know these shoes would make her smile
And I want her to look beautiful if Mama meets Jesus tonight

Bridge:
I knew I’d caught a glimpse of heaven’s love
As he thanked me and ran out
I knew that God had sent that little boy
To remind me just what Christmas is all about

Repeat Chorus

  1. Hey Susie! My personal Christmas nightmare? Feliz Navidad. It’s like a dentist’s drill, the Chinese Water Torture of holiday music. Jose Feliciano cheerfully sings one verse and follows it up with the SAME VERSE, as if he’s expanding on a thought instead of repeating himself. Plus it’s bilingual so half the planet can be terrorized. A universal message of nausea…

  2. Dana Says:

I was going to come here and defend Alabama (whom I LOVE – mainly because I was born in their hometown) because they are not the original recording artist. But then I realized that the original recording artist was a Contemporary Christian group from around here that I also love. So, I’ll just shut up trying to defend Alabama and NewSong and instead just agree to bash the song with you. Christmas songs should not be sad. They should be happy or reverent… never sad! Kind of defeats the whole purpose of the season… whether you are Christian or not.
